In Norse mythology, Pesta is the personification of plagues and the Black Death. She appears as a haggard, old woman dressed in black. Pesta brings death and illness to the farms and villages she visits. But the fate of the inhabitants varies based on what she carries: when she holds a broom everyone dies, but if she holds a rake some inhabitants survive.
